In 2011 I sailed to the Antarctic Peninsula aboard the lovely tallship Bark Europa. This is a journey to an earlier era of exploration, before cruise ships commercialized the Southern Ocean. Juxtaposing my sailor’s connection to the sea with the ethereal and brutal quality of Antarctica, I reveal the region's darker side. Banishing our idealized visions of adorable pristine penguins, and sunny frozen seascapes these images record the unforgivingness of nature in a land devoid of time and scale and the enormous human effort required for such a quest.
